What is search engine optimization? Search engine optimization (SEO), is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. (wikipedia.org, 2013) In other words, search engine optimization (SEO) is setting your website up so it will show every time someone searches for a specific word or phrase.

Take my name for example. If you type “rodneybrooksjr” in the search bar. Just about all my sites will show up on the front page of the search results!

This is more like branding but if anybody types in rodneybrooksjr, I will dominate the search results! This is what you want to do with the keyword or phrase you pick. When somebody does a search you want to be at least on the first page but if you can be in the first five positions of the search results, you will really see some traffic and we all know what that means!.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is more than just keywords, which is called onsite seo. It also includes offsite SEO too. There is a difference between onpage and offpage SEO.  It might take you awhile to remember but onpage seo is what you do on your site (hence the word on) and offpage SEO is what you do off your site (hence the word off).

Onpage SEO

Onpage SEO consists of many different factors but if you want to learn search engine optimization, start with the Title, URL, META Description, and Keywords.


Your title should be no more than 70 characters and the reason is most search engines only use 70 characters . If you want too, you can write more but the search engines will most likely disregard the rest. In addition, to the length, make sure you include one or two keywords in there too. For example if you were trying to rank for car, your title should be something like, “New hybrid car for sale – Buy this car and save on gas.” This might be a bad example but do you get the picture? Car is in the title twice. One keyword is good but if you can  put two, it will be a lot better.


Yes, the URL need to be optimized too, this is the basics of SEO and just like before, make sure you include your keyword or phrase in the URL. This is not always possible but make sure you get in the habit of doing every thing you can it put it in there. If you have a blog it will be a little bit easier than somebody with a traditional website. With a blog every time you create a new post the blog uses the title as the URL (If you have to your setting set up).

Example: “https://rodneybrooksjr.com/increase-traffic-website/

My domain name is rodneybrooksjr.com but the URL also has increase, traffic, and website in it. Guess what my keywords are?

META description

META description is how search engines list your site in engines. Generally not an influence in ranking on most engines, it still gets shown as text to support a listing in natural search and does influence click through rate and relevance. (evolution search marketing, 2013) So make sure you write a description that will make somebody click on you link. The META description character rules are similar to the title rule but search engines only use 160 characters. Again, you can write more but why, It would be useless.

Here is a good example of a META description with the keyword as ice cream.:

“Buy two ice cream cones and get the third free. Friday's only from 11am to 7 pm EST.”

Notice how it is more like an ad and the keyword is only in there once but when the Rich Snippet of you site shows in the search results, you will have a about three keywords showing in bold. Two in the title, one in the URL, and one in the  META description.

Keywords play a major roll in search engine optimization (SEO) and should be researched carefully. You could get all your onpage SEO optimized but if the keyword has a lot of competition, it will be hard to rank for it.  A good tip for keyword with alot of competition, is using long tale keywords.

A Long Tale keyword is a term used to describe less searched for words but whose combined search volumes may outweigh those of the top ten keywords. As a concept, optimizing a website for long tail keywords may prove extremely successful by essentially taking a big piece of a small pie. (Web Design Directory, 2013)

Lets say you were trying to rank for the keyword word tire. The word alone might have tons of people trying to rank for it(MrTire, Tire Plus, etc…) but what about “How to fix a flat tire” or “Which tire is the best for snow” You might be able to rank for these phrases ten times faster than just the single word tire. This is just an example.

Off Page SEO

Off Page SEO refers to optimization strategies outside of your website’s design such as link building with authoritative sites with relevant content. (webopedia, 2013) Some of you that are reading this might have already done some link building but social link building.

Link build is just as it sounds, building links. The best way to build links is natural. What I mean by natural is, going to different blogs, website, directors, and dropping them yourself. You can hire somebody but make sure they are dropping them themselves.

There are software programs out there that can drop 10,000 links a day but when Google finds out, they will deindexed you in a heart beat and If you get deindexed, you will lose all the work you have done. That’s if you can convince Google to index your site again. There are advanced techniques that involve using software like that but for this post I am just going over the basics of SEO.
